Jumping Gemini Card Trick

by Darwin Ortiz

Effect

The magician takes four cards from the deck in his hand. He then shows that one of the cards is the Two of Hearts. He places the Two of Hearts in multiples places and each time, it jumps to the top of the packet. He then says that the trick could easily be accomplished by having four duplicate cards. To disprove that theory, the magician shows that each card is actually the Ten of Spades. Finally, the magician surprises everyone by changing the four cards into the four Kings.

Method

  1. Prepare for the trick ahead of time by placing on the deck, from top to bottom, the King of Clubs, the King of Diamonds, the Ten of Spades, and the Two of Hearts.
  2. Deal the top three cards, one at a time, face down onto the table.
  3. Then, pull off the Two of Hearts from the top of the deck, show it to the spectators, and place it face down under the cards on the table.
  4. Next, set the deck aside and pick up the four cards on the table.
  5. Perform an Elmsley count, bring the Two of Hearts to the second-from-top position in the packet. Announce that there are just four cards as you perform the count.
  6. Next, perform a double turnover, saying that the Two of Hearts is now on top.
  7. Turn the two cards back over as one so that they are face down again.
  8. Move the top card of the packet to the bottom of the packet.
  9. Turn over the top card of the packet to reveal the Two of Hearts.
  10. Turn the Two of Hearts back over so that it is face down again.
  11. Spread the cards in the packet, and place the Two of Hearts so that it is the third card from the top of the packet.
  12. Square the packet, and perform a triple turnover.
  13. Turn the three cards back over as one so that all of the cards are face down again.
  14. Place the top card of the packet onto the table.
  15. Again, perform a double turnover, saying that the Two of Hearts is now on top.
  16. Turn the two cards back over as one so that they are face down again.
  17. Move the top card of the packet to the bottom of the packet.
  18. Turn over the top card of the packet to reveal the Two of Hearts.
  19. Turn the Two of Hearts back over so that it is face down.
  20. Push off the top two cards as one into your other hand's fingers, and place them under the packet (it should look as if you just moved a single card to the bottom of the packet).
  21. Perform a double turnover to show that the Two of Hearts is back on top.
  22. Turn over the two cards as one so that both are face down again.
  23. Place the top card of the packet onto the table, above the one already on the table.
  24. Turn over the top card of the packet to show the Two of Hearts again.
  25. Turn the Two of Hearts back over, and place it face down underneath the packet.
  26. Slide the packet of two cards in your hand underneath the two cards on the table.
  27. Explain that the trick could easily be accomplished by having four duplicate cards.
  28. Then, perform a triple turnover to show that the top card is the Ten of Spades.
  29. Turn the three cards back over as one.
  30. Perform a double lift with your non-deck hand, but keep the cards face down in Biddle grip.
  31. Push off the new top card of the packet in your deck hand, and turn over the card onto the packet with the two face down cards in your other hand. It should look like you showed the Ten of Spades as the second card in the packet.
  32. Turn the Ten of Spades face down in the same way that you turned it face up, and then place the two cards in Biddle grip on top of the face down Ten of Spades.
  33. Push over the top two cards (this time as two cards) into the non-deck hand. Hold them in Biddle grip.
  34. Use the two cards in your non-deck hand to turn over the top card of the packet, which is the Ten of Spades.
  35. Use the two cards in your non-deck hand to turn the Ten of Spades back over so that it is face down.
  36. Place the two cards on top of the face down Ten of Spades but to the side. The spectator should be able to see three cards spread out face down.
  37. Use the fingers of your deck hand to push the bottom card, which is hidden, towards your non-deck hand. It should slide underneath the other two cards easily.
  38. Pinch the top and bottom of the face down Ten of Spades with the thumb and index finger of your deck hand.
  39. Use the non-deck hand to pull the other three cards away from the Ten of Spades. As you pull the three cards away, turn the Ten of Spades face up.
  40. Use the three cards to turn the Ten of Spades face down again.
  41. Place the three cards on top of the face down Ten of Spades, and close up the packet.
  42. Now, perform a Flushtration count to show that each card is the Ten of Spades.
  43. Finally, perform a Gemini count to show a red King, a black King, a red King, and a black King. Do not call out the suits of the Kings since you are showing two of the same Kings twice. Try to use your thumbs to cover the pips of the Kings.
  44. Place the cards into the deck to clean up.
